Birthday Notes — 13.09

I was born on 13 September 2003.

Most days that date is bureaucratic — a field on a form, a line on an ID, a calendar reminder that arrives whether I’m ready or not. Once a year it softens. Someone asks how old I am. Someone brings cake. Someone forgets, and that is fine too.

This year I put the date on the site. Not because birthdays need SEO. Because if this domain is going to carry my name, it should also carry the small things that make the name a person.

September in Hà Nội

I write this from Hà Nội, where I work as a frontend developer — Next.js, React, TypeScript, the usual tools that turn briefs into interfaces people actually touch.

September here is a hinge. The heat loosens. The light gets a little kinder in the late afternoon. It feels like the right weather for inventory: not a performance review, just an honest look at what still feels true.

I have spent the last stretch rebuilding this portfolio in public — the rebuild journal, the vitals notes, anonymized case studies that respect NDAs without going blank. The stack barely changed. My patience for work that only looks finished changed a lot.

Another birthday does not make me a different engineer overnight. It does make me slower to ship something I would not proudly explain out loud.

The quiet rules I want to keep

I want craft that survives a second look. Fewer thin posts. Deeper ones. Case studies that show judgment even when the client logo stays off the page.

I want personality with a budget. The mascot, the duck, River Bot, the silly pixel mode — they are allowed to exist because this is my site. They are not allowed to permanently tax mobile LCP for a joke nobody asked for twice.

I want my name to resolve cleanly. Nguyễn Đình Giang / River should lead back to rivernguyen.id.vn — not dissolve into a GitHub handle or a LinkedIn collision with someone else’s career.

And I want to stop performing trends I do not believe in. Terminal-OS portfolios. Analytics dashboards I never open. Pretending NDA work can be dressed up as a public SaaS case study. That theater is tiring, and I am done auditioning for it.

What a birthday is for

Birthdays are soft deadlines. They do not demand a new self. They ask a simpler question: are you still building in a way you can stand behind?

Today the answer is mostly yes — with a longer list of things I will quietly refuse next year.
